On Wednesday Morning
18newspaper.com caught up with the morning show host on Hitz103.9fm – Louis
Sakyiamah popularly known as Lexis Bill on the issue of what he thinks about
the arts being regulated to the floor by government and cooperate bodies.
The morning show host who
was looking bright that morning in his colorful yellow and black suit smiled a
lot when the question was asked and said: ‘this question has one simple answer
which is, the arts as an industry was or is still disrespected from our basic
schools especially during SHS selection of courses and schools’.
Lexis explained his answer more, ‘what is the
grade a student will require to get admission into a science, business and General
arts courses as compared to the Visual arts which is the pillar of many of our
arts works in the country.’
18newspaper interviewer,
Nana Yaw Wiredu, gave the answer as, one will require a grade of 6 -10 to get a
science course, 6-12 to do business, for the arts (both visual & General) it mostly does not have a fixed grade or a cut
off point as you can have 12 -24, 6-18 and still get a visual arts course.
Lexis said, so you see,
that is the first major problem, right from our basic schools, students who are
tagged to be brilliant are pushed to the wall to take up courses in the
sciences and business were as the visual arts courses get those students who
are not too brilliant or lazy according to our teachers.
That should not be the
case, the visual arts course which is one of the most difficult in our
curriculum is tagged to be the loose course hence anybody with any grades can
offer, and it is a huge mistake but it happening unfortunately.
So if you are in a country
where by teachers don’t encourage students to take up the arts courses with
better grades right from the basic school how do you expect those in the
cooperate bodies and government who perhaps offered the sciences and business
to take us serious because right from their basic education they were given the
impression that the arts is for lazy and non brilliant students, Lexis
stressed.
In his ending words, lexis
said yes, the arts industry need verification from the government but ask yourself,
how many of these government officials will even encourage their kids, cousins,
nieces and nephews to take the arts course with let’s say aggregate 6? It will
never happen, so do you expect that that
child after he /she has grown with that
knowledge will take the arts serious, he / she will not, so therefore the
cancer grows and will eat us till we change that basic education rule.
18newspaper.com had a
wonderful interview time with the day break hitz host inside his office at Hitz fm. We must say the voice of the player is the voice of the industry hence
we will plead to teachers to encourage students with the arts talent to take up
the arts course when they have the right grades.
